53ft Vehicle Landing Craft

VLC 1 was designed and built to meet the exacting requirement of being within 15 tons maximum weight for lifting on board a cargo boat. VLC 1 was specially built in aluminium alloy by the Fairmaile Construction Co Ltd. VLC 1 was designed to carry a refuelling tank vehicle of 14.5 tons, and to be capable of landing it on a beach.

After being taken on charge in July 1954, VLC 1 remained at Calshot until it was allocated to Khormaksar, Aden on the 21st July 1959. She was used in Aden, Masirah and Salalah alongside Army store vessels and "Z" craft. Eventually the Army took over the supply of RAF bases, and so VLC 1 was transferred to the RCT on 22nd June 1964. She worked with the Army for a further four years before being shipped back to the UK for disposal through sale.
